The royal couple’s outfits were no exception, from ceremonial robes dating back generations to newly-commissioned garments reflecting the new King and Queen’s personal tastes.
Each roundel features an embroidered image which has been created using the silk shading technique, also known as ‘painting with a needle’. For the first time, insects including bees and a beetle feature on the Coronation Robe, drawing on the themes of nature and the environment and reflecting Their Majesties’ affection for the natural world. Traditionally, the monarch dons opulent vestments that reflect nothing less than their holy mandate, like an embroidered robe made of gold silk known as the “Supertunica,” which is worn for part of the ancient ceremony.
The design of the crimson coronation tunic is inspired by similar tunics worn by King George V and King George VI at their coronations. On top of the Supertunica will be a floor-length cloak named the Imperial Mantle, or Robe Royal, which was made for George IV in 1821. Importantly, McQueen worked with London based milliner Jess Collett to make Greek-like, silver floral headbands in the place of a tiara squashing months of speculation over whether she would be borrowing from the Royal collection, and fears of a flower crown more suited to Glastonbury. The king robe is very suitable for Halloween party, costume party, fancy dress party or other themed occasions. This piece is made up of white leather, and further features gilt metal thread embroidery depicting the national emblems of the Tudor Rose, thistle, shamrock, oak leaves, and acorns.
